First Date Tips for Avoiding A Disastrous Situation

Earlier today I had to take one of those phone calls that always saddens me to take.  A VIP client of mine was on a date, and well, let’s just say things didn’t go as planned.  .

Her date was rude, made perverted comments, and looked nothing like his pictures.  As much as I wish these types of situations could be prevented completely, sometimes bad dates are inevitable.

Online dating is a numbers game and as the saying goes, sometimes you have to meet a bunch of frogs before find a prince.   Okay, that’s not exactly the saying.  But you get the idea!

And while bad dates can never be completely avoided, there are some actions you could take to minimize your chances of having a 1st date from hell.  Let’s take a look at some measures you can implement into your dating life right now.

Always set a time limit before meeting in person.  

“Drinks at 7 sounds great.  Just so you know though, I can only meet for about an hour, I have to help a friend out with something after, but looking forward to meeting you!”

You may have the entire night free, but your date doesn’t have to know that.

By creating a time constraint prior to meeting, you have limited the total amount of awkwardness in the event that your date turns out to be a disaster.  This is a lot less awkward than attempting to create an excuse to leave on the fly.  It also allows you to leave with ease because your date expects it.

And if you decide you want to stay longer because you are having a great time, you could always say that your plans fell through or tell the truth and have a good laugh about your motivations.

Pay attention to the signs online

Before you agree to a first date, pay attention to any signals that something may be off.

Does he text you way too much?  Was there something off about one of his online dating profile pictures?  Did a line in his profile rub you the wrong way?  Do you feel like he might just be out for sex?

If your instincts have you second guessing anything, even if it’s really tiny, trust those instincts.  They are usually correct.

Always meet in a neutral location

Unfortunately the good old days of a guy walking to your door to pick you up are long gone.  There are just way too many crazies out there.Make sure you meet in a public setting with lots of people around.

Avoid providing too much information

There are a lot of sheep in wolves clothing out there.  Never give our your Facebook, family information, home address, or anything that could come back to haunt you.

The odds of running into someone dangerous is extremely rare.   Most of the creeps are just harmless weirdoes.  But occasionally bad things happen and you do not want to accidentally find yourself in that position.
